email security news round-up

As human behaviour and interaction continue to be shaped by increasingly ubiquitous technologies, organizations must continuously adapt and enhance their capabilities to deal with and prevent email security issues from malicious actors from taking undue advantage of the shifting technological landscape.

Keeping yourself updated with the cybersecurity news must be your top priority for email protection and the security of various other digital payment gateways. If you are willing to unlock the true potential of the digital economy, then keeping a track of the email security latest news is crucial.  In all domains of society, email server security plays a vital role and must never be neglected. We are here to provide you with the latest information about email security news and other updates in the cybersecurity world.

Cyberattack in The Works

Cybersecurity is not a separate technology but rather a foundational set of systems spanning technology, people, and processes. As per the latest reports of email security news roundup, UK retail chain The Works shuts down stores after a cyberattack (April 6, 2022). As per the reports, UK retail chain The Works announced that it was forced to shut down several of its stores due to massive cyberattack incidents involving unauthorized access to its computer systems.

DMARC email security ensures your protection against such cybercrimes. The email spam protection is an undeniable aspect of the digital world and in order to keep up with secure email solutions, getting DMARC deployed is a must.

530 Stores Shut Due To Unauthorized Access In Computer Systems

The discount retailer operates 530 stores in the United Kingdom and Ireland selling books, toys, stationery, art, and craft materials, and has an annual revenue of about $300 million. Although the announcement doesn’t go into many details about the nature of the incident, but it appears to have interrupted replenishment deliveries, extended online order fulfillment times, and compromised the safety of payments. Hence, secure email is an utmost priority these days.

Finnish Defence Ministry Hit By Cyberattack

Let’s move on to the next email security news round-up according to which Finnish foreign affairs and defence ministry websites are hit by cyber-attacks in April 2022. The website of Finland’s defense and foreign affairs ministries was out of service on Friday, the announcements were made by the ministry in separate tweets right before 1 pm.

The defence ministry said its website was taken down by a denial of service (DoS) attack and that it was investigating the matter. This tells us more than enough about the importance of DMARC services and the importance of security for mail server.

The defence ministry’s communications chief, Kristian Vakkuri, confirmed that a DoS attack was the cause of problems with its services. The DoS attacks occurred just as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the Finnish Parliament.

What Is Denial of Service (DoS)?

A denial-of-service attack is carried out by flooding a targeted website with excessive traffic or sending it information that triggers it to crash.

RemcosRAT malware Found In African banks

African banks were heavily targeted in RemcosRAT malware campaigns (April 13, 2022)

African banks are increasingly targeted by malware distribution campaigns that employ HTML smuggling tricks and typo-squatted domains to drop remote access trojans (RATs).

What is RemcosRAT?

The attack begins with a phishing email sent to a bank employee from a typo-squatted domain that resembles the URL of a legitimate company, typically a competitor bank.

The email presents the recipient with a lucrative job offer and links to the details on the said site. Following that link takes the victim to a webpage containing application instructions.

The content of this page is copied from an actual listing by the mimicked bank, so the details there appear convincingly realistic.

These sites don’t perform phishing or host malware, so their sole purpose is to lead the victim down the infection path.

India’s Largest Hydrocarbon Producer Hit By Cyber Attack

India’s second-largest government-owned hydrocarbon producer was hit by a major cyberattack (April 14,2022)

The state-run Oil India Limited (OIL) has been hit by a major cyberattack that has compromised some of the servers of company. The ransomware attack has hit the company’s headquarters in Assam.

According to media reports, the hackers have demanded 196 bitcoins as ransom. At the current prices (approx. ₹31.35 lakh per bitcoin), that is a little more than ₹61 crore.

According to a statement from the company’s spokesperson Tridiv Hazarika, while the breach is serious and the virus is severe, the company has disabled the affected systems as a precautionary measure.

UK Government Staff Hit with Billions of Malicious Emails in 2021 (April 20, 2022)

UK government employees are targeted with billions of malicious emails every year, according to Comparitech. The tech comparison firm received answers from 260 government organizations to which it submitted freedom of information (FOI) requests.

From these, it then calculated those 764,331 government employees ‘received’ a total of nearly 2.7 billion malicious emails in 2021 – amounting to an average of 2399 each.

Comparitech calculated that this could mean as many as 57,736 suspicious links were clicked on last year by UK government employees. The firm again clarified that it discounted any FOI answers which weren’t clear in order to reduce the chances of over-estimating this figure.

When assessed per employee, it appears that NHS Digital recorded the highest number of malicious emails for 2021 (89,353), followed by the government of Northern Ireland (34,561) and the Financial Reporting Council (25,992).
